Abstract
Talbot Mercer Papineau (1883-1917), an Anglophone and the grandson of Patriote leader Louis-Joseph Papineau, wrote to his Francophone cousin Henri Bourassa (1868-1952) in 1916 outlining his support for Canada's participation in the First World War. Bourassa replied, outlining his opposition to conscription and Canada's participation in a war of imperialism. Papineau died the following year at the Battle of Passendale, Belgium.
