A detailed reconstruction of the circumstances of Black Montrealers and their lived experiences in the eighty years between the British Conquest and the union of Lower and Upper Canada. The author focuses on slavery, emancipation and Black life in the realms of work, political culture, the criminal justice system, and the interracial arenas of marriage and apprenticeships.
