Abstract |
A social history of Montreal's musical life in the mid-nineteenth century. The author points out that major performing activities included concerts, balls, and soirées. Music also played an incidental but important role in the theatre, church, pleasure outings, and ceremonies. The author also describes those activities related to music, such as instrument building and selling, publishing, and teaching.
