Abstract |
A history of the Irish Fenian movement in Quebec at the time of Confederation. The Fenians, using the Hibernian Society as a front, tried to arouse both the Montreal Irish and French Canadian Catholic communities to rise up against the Crown. The author discusses the role played by Thomas D'Arcy McGee (1825-1868), a Montreal newspaper editor and politician and former member of the Young Ireland movement from which the Fenians evolved, in persuading the Montreal Irish community to reject the Fenian cause. McGee was assassinated, allegedly for his anti-Fenian beliefs.
