Abstract |
The Wakefield flour mill on the Rivière la Pêche in Gatineau was built by William Fairbairn in 1838. In 1844, James and John Maclaren bought the mill, and it remained in the Maclaren family for the next 95 years. In 1939 it was bought by J.P. Henderson. Around 1950 Henderson leased the mill to brothers Kenneth and Ernest Young. In 1962, Henderson put the mill up for sale. In order to preserve this piece of Gatineau's heritage, the National Capital Commission purchased the mill and the operation of the mill was left in the hands of the Young brothers, who continued operations until 1980. That year, the Young brothers retired. The mill fell silent.
