Abstract
A study of the effects of major fire disasters on urban areas in Canada between 1816 and 1892. Included in the study is information on the serious fires in Montreal and Quebec City in the nineteenth century, the eventual establishment of professional fire departments in those two cities, and English-French differences over the issue of relief-aid to fire victims.
