The Woman as Artist and as Subject in Canadian Painting, 1890-1930
Abstract
An examination of female imagery that appeared in Canadian paintings between 1890 and 1930. The author studies the work of three late-nineteenth century women painters – including Helen Galloway McNicoll (1879-1915) who grew up in Montreal and began her art education in 1899 at the Art Association of Montreal. The Art Association of Montreal held a memorial exhibition of over 140 of her paintings and sketches in 1925.
