Title
Les seigneurs à la Chambre d'assemblée du Bas-Canada (1792-1814)
Abstract
The author examines the ethnicity, origin, occupation, political allegiance and voting patterns of the members of the Legislative Assembly between 1792 and 1814 who also owned seigneuries in Lower Canada. She concludes that these seigneurs-deputies were a heterogeneous group, both socio-economically and politically. Over the eleven elections or by-elections during the period under review, 52 of these seigneurs/politicians were Francophones, all but one born in Canada, and 28 were Anglophones. Of these, 25 Francophones and 13 Anglophones were elected more than once. Of this latter group, seven of the Anglophones were merchants, eight were businessmen, and two were bureaucrats. Of the Francophones, two were merchants, one was a businessman, seven were either lawyers or notaries , one was a doctor, nine were bureaucrats, one was in the military and seven were full-time seigneurs.
