Abstract
A study of municipal reaction to public health in Montreal, from the apprehended cholera outbreak of 1865 to the smallpox epidemic of 1885-1886. The authors single out the role played by Mayor William Hingston, a medical doctor, in upgrading the sanitary conditions of the city during his term in office (1875-1877).
