Abstract
The catalogue for this exhibition, by Christopher Varley, outlines and discusses the history of Montreal's Contemporary Arts Society, starting with painter John Lyman and his circle of artists (Alexander Bercovitch, Goodridge Roberts, Eric Goldberg, Jack Weldon Humphrey and Jori Smith) who had formed in 1938 the Eastern Group of Painters which evolved into the Contemporary Arts Society. Varley discusses the initial formation of the Contemporary Arts Society in 1939, its early exhibitions, the Society's spreading scope of influence, "the ascendency of the French faction", and the division within and eventual decline and end of the Society by 1948.
