Title
Le 9 juin 1853 à Montréal : encore l’Affaire Gavazzi
Abstract
Alessandro Gavazzi (1809-1889) was a nineteenth-century Italian former priest who turned anti-Roman Catholic. His presence in Montreal in 1853, following speeches in Toronto and Quebec City denouncing Pope Pius IX, led to a riot between the city's English Protestants and Irish Catholics. The military opened fire on the rioters, with deadly results.
