Title
Une capitale éphémère. Montréal et les événements tragiques de 1849
Abstract
On April 25, 1849, Montreal's Anglophone Tory commercial class stormed the Parliament building, which was then located in that city, in protest over the passage of the Rebellion Losses Bill. The protesters saw the bill as compensating those who participated in treasonous acts during the Rebellions of 1837 and 1838, as well as the hegemony of Francophones over Canada East's political process. During the riot, the Parliament building was burnt.
