Abstract
An examination of the circumstances leading to the development in the 1920s of the United Amusement Corporation, a chain of Montreal movie theatres established by Greek-born George Ganetakos that specialized in showing “second-run” films in theatres outside the downtown core. Ganetakos entered this developing entertainment business in 1912 when he opened the Strand theatre, later taken over by the Toronto-based Famous Players Canadian.
