Abstract
The British-born author and journalist Samuel Hull Wilcocke (1766-1833) immigrated to Montreal in 1817 as a publicist for the Montreal-based North West Company in its dispute with the Hudson's Bay Company over the attempts of Lord Selkirk to establish a colony on the Red River. Whilst in jail following a dispute with the North West Company, Wilcocke founded The Scribbler on June 28, 1821, a satirical newspaper noted for its attacks on the agents and officials of the North West Company and on the respectability of prominent English-speaking Montrealers.
