Abstract
The Eastern Townships village of Waterville was first settled by American and British immigrants in the early nineteenth century. Industrial development began in 1810 with the construction of a sawmill by Compton Township businessman Joseph Pennoyer, who collected seven tons of hemp at his sawmill for the manufacture of British ship cords.
