|
Abstract |
The author outlines the history of the main entrance to McGill University grounds through the gates on Sherbrooke Street, starting with a a ceremonial arched hedge built in 1860 to mark the visit of the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII). The present gate, known as the Roddick Gates and Clock Tower, was constructed in 1925 in honour of Sir Thomas Roddick (1846-1923), a renowned Montreal doctor and Dean of McGill's Faculty of Medicine from 1901 to 1908. The author gives a brief biography of Thomas Roddick and his wife, Amy Redpath Roddick (1868-1954), and the history of the Roddick Gates.
