The British and Foreign Bible Society, sometime referred to simply as the Bible Society, was founded in England in 1804. As early as 1804, the Rev. Francis Dick, a minister of the Congregational Church, established a Bible Society in Quebec City. In 1813, the British and Foreign Bible Society shipped 100 French Bibles, 400 French Testaments, 250 English Bibles, and 250 English Testaments to the Rev. Austin of Montreal for distribution.
