Abstract
A study of the transformation of a privileged elite, the between fifty and one hundred and fifty Montrealers (mostly Scots) who owned up to two-thirds of the wealth of Canada at the turn of the twentieth century. The author interviewed one hundred and ten descendants of these financiers and entrepreneurs, who shared their memories of life in Montreal’s Golden Square Mile before the period when the economic capital of Canada shifted to Toronto.
