Title
L’incendie du parlement et le manifeste annexionniste : la face cachée du torysme montréalais (1832-1849)
Abstract
An examination of what the author describes was "l'arrière-fond republican de l'idéologie ultra-tory" of English-speaking Montreal merchants during the period 1832 to 1848, as exemplified by the editorial positions of the Montreal Herald and the Montreal Gazette. The author believes that this ideology led to the burning of the Parliament building in 1849, then located in Montreal, in protest by the Tories over the passage of the Rebellion Losses Act.
