Abstract |
In March 1798, Thomas Carey (1751-1823) of Quebec City published "Abram's Plains: a poem". This rhymed poem of 568 lines describes the St. Lawrence Valley, the towns along the river's banks, and the people who lived there. The author points out that the poem was meant to illustrate the civilizing power that the British mercantile presence bestowed on Quebec in the thirty years after Wolfe's victory on the Plains of Abraham.
