Title
On The Jews of Lower Canada and 1837-38
Abstract
Based on the diaries of a few of the hundred or so Jews living in Lower Canada in 1837-38, the author outlines this community's reaction to the political and military consequences leading up to and during the rebellions in the colony during those two years. As newly "emancipated" citizens, Jews faced their first civic challenge -- the outbreak of rebellion called for voluntary enlistment in the military defence of the colony's established government. The author quotes from "an impressive documentation of the Jewish military presence on the active fronts." He points out that Benjamin Hart, a newly appointed justice of the peace, “appears at the heart of the legal and military process designed to quiet the unrest.”
