Beaurivage: The Development of an Irish Ethnic Identity in Rural Quebec, 1820-1860
Abstract
A study of the Irish community southwest of Quebec City, comprising the parishes of St. Sylvestre and St. Patrice, in the old Seigneury of Beaurevage. The author explains why some Irish Catholics were not assimilated into French Canadians, despite what he believes were the "strong similarities in the culture and history of both." Highlighted are two mid-nineteenth century incidents in these communities: the Corrigan affair of 1855 involving the murder of an Orangeman by Irish Catholics; and the 1858 election.
