Title
The Educational Process and Identity: Perceptions of Ethnic Youth
Abstract
An examination of the perceptions of Montreal ethnic youths, especially those of Greek origin, towards education as it relates to academic achievement, aspirations and social mobility, as well as socialization and sense of identity. The author sets out to determine the extent to which Montreal schools have provided for the youth of Greek origin in particular, and youth of other ethnic origins in general, in terms of social and cultural expectations. The author investigates the schools and the Greek or other ethnic homes as cultural forces and their effect upon students' problem-solving and adaptation during the course of their studies. The author recorded the views of 127 Montreal youth of Greek and other ethnic origins, in grade 11, who may or may not have been born in Canada but whose parents maintain their own cultural tradition. The author concludes that the harmonious development of a bicultural identity within a pluralistic society, enhancement of academic achievement and access to its social, economic, and political structures, may come about if the Canadian school would offer language and heritage courses along with the regular curriculum.
