Bagarres entre militaires et «zoot-suiters» survenues à Montréal et à Verdun en juin 1944 : problème de langue, de relations entre civils et militaires ou de rébellion juvénile?
Abstract
In late May and early June 1944, the Montreal area was rocked by a series of large-scale brawls pitting servicemen, primarily sailors, against civilians, many of them “zoot-suit”-wearing youths. Some reports at the time described these confrontations on the south shore, in downtown Montreal and in Verdun as an English-French clash, pitting the predominately English-speaking sailors against the zoot-suiters, who were described as French Canadians. The author points out that most of the youths were not French Canadians, but an ethnic mix and many of Italian origin. The author concludes that there is no single explanation for the riots, but can be traced to a combination of language differences, civil-military relations in the city, a lack of military discipline and a lackadaisical approach to gang violence on the part of the Montreal police.
