René Lévesque et la communauté juive du Québec (1960-1976) : la fragilité d'un dialogue
|
Abstract |
An examination of the interaction of René Lévesque (1922-1987) with Montreal's Jewish community between 1960 and 1976. As a journalist, then a Liberal Cabinet Minister, leader of the Parti Québécois, and Premier of Quebec (1976 to 1985), Lévesque tried to maintain an open dialogue with the Jewish community despite that community's historic fears of anti-Semitism within nationalist movements, including Quebec's sovereignty movement. The author points out that Lévesque and certain members of the city's Jewish community sought to maintain a healthy dialogue between Jews and French-Canadians during the period under review.
