Title
'Gli Italiani non hanno paura': Italian-Language Newspapers and the 1970 October Crisis
Abstract
An examination of how Montreal's Italian community newspapers reacted to the FLQ terrorist activities that lead in 1970 to the kidnapping of British diplomat James Cross and the kidnapping and murder of Quebec politician Pierre Laporte. In response to these kidnapping, the federal government, at the request of the Quebec Premier and Montreal's mayor, invoked the War Measures Act. The author contends that the historiography of this crisis focusses mainly on the "main players" and the Anglophone-Francophone communities, and ignores the Italian community, the largest ethnic group (163,655 Italians lived in Quebec in 1971) in the province.
