Abstract
The Irish-born Sulpician priest Patrick Dowd (1813-1891) was posted to Montreal in 1848 to serve the city's Irish community centered at St. Patrick's Church. The author outlines the correspondence in 1853 between Dowd, the Bishop of Toronto and the Vatican over Dowd's refusal to accept the appointment as coadjutor bishop of Toronto.
