Abstract
On September 29, 1888, Annie Grey McDougall (1866-1952) of Drummondville, Quebec, visited the Montreal photographic studio of William Notman (1826-1891) to purchase a camera, having been introduced to photography by her brother-in-law, Charles Howard Millar (1856-1939). At the studio, Notman took an informal picture of Ms. McDougall, probably to demonstrate how the camera she intended to purchase worked. Using the photo, the author is able to describe Notman's studio, seldom seen in any of his other photos. After purchasing the camera, Annie McDougall later returned to Montreal in order to learn camera and dark room techniques at Notman's studio. She often worked in series, and most of her photographic images depict daily life in the Drummondville and Pierreville areas of Quebec. Annie McDougall later worked as a librarian at the Fraser Institute in Montreal. After her death Annie McDougall's nephew, Leslie Howard Millar, donated 185 of her negatives to Montreal's McCord Museum, joining the 450,000 Notman photographic archive also located at the McCord.
