Title
Bonjour! Shalom! Hassidic Jews and Their French-Québecois Neighbors
Abstract
Examines the life and influence of a community of Hassidic Jews in the largely French-speaking Montreal suburb of Outremont. Intent on preserving their religious traditions, the Hassidim meet outsiders with a kind of protective wall. Misunderstanding the Hassidic way of life, many of the Francophone residents of Outremont respond to their Jewish neighbours with a mixture of mistrust, frustration and curiosity.
