Abstract
The Scottish-born merchant and fur trader James McGill (1744-1813) was elected to the Montreal West seat in the first Legislative Assembly in 1792, serving as the House Speaker. He did not stand for re-election to the Assembly in 1796, but he was returned for Montreal West in 1800, and then for Montreal East in 1804. At his death he left an endowment to establish a college or university in Montreal, which was named after him when it received its charter in 1821 and opened in 1829.
