Notman's Numbers
Abstract
The Scottish-born William Notman (1826-1891) immigrated to Montreal in 1856 and opened his photographic studio that year. The studio was eventually taken over by his sons and remained in operation in the city until 1935. Notman was Canada's first internationally recognized photographer and renowned for his portraits, landscapes, cityscapes and composites photos. The Notman Photographic Archive, containing approximately 200,000 glass negatives and 450,000 prints, was donated to Montreal's McCord Museum, a process begun by Charles F. Notman (1870-1955) in 1955. The author explains Notman's internal studio record-keeping system, which assigned a chronological order to the entire sequence of photographs now in the archive and allows any picture taken by the Montreal studio to be identified and dated.
