Abstract |
A study of the Mountain and Nicolls families of nineteenth century Quebec, prominent members of the Anglican elite of the province. The Mountain family arrived in Quebec City in 1793. Jacob Mountain (1749-1825) was the first Anglican bishop of the Diocese of Quebec; Jehosaphat Mountain (1745-1817) and Satter Jehoshaphat Mountain both became priests of the diocese; and George Jehoshaphat Mountain (1789-1863) was the third Anglican bishop of the diocese. Jasper Hume Nicolls (1818-1877), related to the Mountain family by marriage, was an Anglican priest and the first principal of Bishop's College, a liberal arts and Anglican divinity school located in Lennoxville, Quebec. Nicolls held the position at Bishop's for thirty-two years.
