Title
The Canadian Response to the Irish Famine Emigration of 1847
Abstract
In 1847, 215,000 Irish fled their famine-stricken homeland for England, North America and Australia. Of this number, 90,000 headed for Canada. It was the largest and most diseased and destitute immigration that Canada had ever received. The author examines how the Imperial Government misled Canadian authorities about the extent and nature of the emigration, and how the colony was forced to deal with the abnormal immigration with only the merest preparations. The author also examines how the strains of the crisis affected relations between the Canada and the Imperial Government.
