Abstract
In 2003, the Library and Archives Canada and the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec purchased thirteen watercolours depicting rare early views of Canada painted by the little-known British Royal Engineers officer and artist Benjamin Fisher (1753-1814). Between 1785 and 1796, Fisher was stationed in Canada, and his watercolours are among the earliest documentary representations of Quebec City, Montreal and other parts of eastern Canada. The paintings were found in a package among a decayed heap of papers discovered by workers clearing cellars beneath Balliol College, part of Oxford University. The paintings had been there since 1850. Fisher's watercolours represent a late eighteenth-century effort to capture the nature of life along the St. Lawrence River corridor in both a topographically correct and artistically advanced manner. The author describes those paintings by Fisher relating to Quebec.
