Title
La gouvernance de James Murray pendant le régime militaire dans le gouvernement de Québec, 1760-1764
Abstract
The author examines the relationship between the rulers and the ruled in the Quebec City region during the post-Conquest administration of James Murray. Based on a document titled "Ordinances, Orders, Regulations and Proclamations during the Military Government in Canada, Oct. 28, 1760 to July 28, 1764." which the author refers to as Murray's Journal, this sixty-nine page document outlines the regulatory action to be followed by the occupants while emphasizing the role of militia captains to whom most of the entries in the document are directed. The author points out that this source also identifies the challenges and difficulties of governance that Murray faced. He contends that through the document there emerges a fairly nuanced portrait of the situation in which the British military had to count on the collaboration of civilians to implement a new colonial regime, and how Murray legitimized the new military authority in the colony.
