Title
Three Preconfederation Painters of the Canadian City. Part I: James Cockburn
Abstract
A study of the paintings of James Pattison Cockburn (1779-1847), a lieutenant-colonel and commander of the Royal Artillery Regiment who was stationed in Quebec from 1822 to 1823 and from 1826 to at least 1832. In 1831 he published a travel book titled Quebec and Its Environs. The author analyzes Cockburn's paintings of Quebec City to study both the influences on the painter and to suggest insights the paintings shed on the period's social life.
