Title
La Ville de Québec et le défi de la capitale (1841-1865)
Abstract
In 1840, with the Union of Upper and Lower Canada, Quebec City lost its status as a capital. The municipal elites, both Francophone and Anglophone, soon come to realize how hosting the seat of government had played a key role in the city’s economic, social and cultural life. A long political battle then began, with various Canadian cities vying to become the permanent capital of the Union. The author argues that when Quebec lost this battle to Ottawa in 1867, it discovered a new role as the political capital of the "Québec State" and the symbolic capital of French Canada.
