Abstract
A biography of the British-born John Charlton Fisher (1794-1849), who immigrated to Quebec City (via New York City) in 1823. Fisher was a printer, publisher and journalist who was appointed Lower Canada's "King's Publisher" and was the founder of the "Quebec Gazette, published by authoritylLa Gazette de Québec publiée par autorité." He also worked as a journalist for the Quebec Mercury newspaper. The author points out that Fisher was one of the figures of note in the English-speaking cultural milieu of Quebec City throughout the second quarter of the nineteenth century. Fisher hosted Charles Dickens during the British writer's visit to Quebec City in 1842.
