Abstract
As a newly ordained minister in the 1820s, William Squire (1795-1852) was sent from London to preach to the slaves in the British West Indies. After he contracted malaria, Squire was sent to Quebec City where he was assigned a circuit riding from there to Shefford Township in the Upper Yamaska Valley. He was appointed to Montreal's St. James Street Methodist Church in 1832 and shortly afterwards Montreal was devastated by a cholera epidemic that killed one person out of eight in the city. He offered emotionally charged religious revival services at the church every night for 30 nights during the epidemic for people needing a base for spiritual support. In 1852, back in Montreal after a wide and varied career, he died caring for a victim in another cholera epidemic and was the first person buried in the Mount Royal Cemetery.
