Abstract
Johann Heinrich Juncken (1735-1802), also known as Henry Juncken, was born in the southwest part of Germany, emigrated to the United States at the age of 18, and moved to Quebec City in 1787 following the War of Independence. A diary he kept shows how he began life anew in Canada, especially by identifying himself with the English-speaking merchants of Quebec City. His prejudices against French-Canadian Catholics is seen by the author as part of Juncken’s strategy to adapt to his new country.
