Toward a History of Kashrut in Montreal: The Fight over Municipal By-Law 828 (1922-1924)
Abstract
Montreal Municipal By-Law 828, adopted by city council in 1923, regulated the kosher poultry abattoirs. It was adopted at the request of the Vaad Ha-Ir, the Montreal Jewish Community Council, to control the lucrative kosher meat industry. This contributed to the “kosher meat war” between rival factions within Montreal’s Jewish community.
