Synagogues, Jewish Schools and Other Jewish Community Facilities as Affected by the Migration of the Jewish Population in Metropolitan Montreal, 1951-1956
Abstract
The author points out that the census of 1951 revealed a great change in the geographic distribution of the Jewish population of Metropolitan Montreal. In 1941 two-thirds of the total Jewish population of Metropolitan Montreal lived in the area between Hutchison and St-Denis Street, concentrated within a narrow strip half a mile wide and two miles long. By 1951 the Jewish population of Metropolitan Montreal had grown by twenty-six percent and had moved in a northwesterly direction so that approximately seventy-five percent of the total Jewish population in that year lived in the newer residential areas west of Hutchison Street and was spread over an area of approximately eight square miles. Most of this growth and change had taken place in the five post-war years from 1946 to 1951. The author examines the impact this demographic and residential change had on Montreal's Jewish institutions, especially its synagogues and schools.
