Title
The Politics of the Société Saint-Jean Baptiste de Montréal
Abstract
Chronicles the political agenda of Montreal’s Société Saint-Jean Baptiste. The author maintains that members advocate the organization’s long-held platform of expressing disdain for the English-speaking ruling class who, the Société believes, attempt to minimize French Quebec’s economic, political and social uniqueness. Although officially a non-partisan organization, the Société Saint-Jean Baptiste has campaigned through various political parties for the enhancement of the French language and of Catholicism throughout Quebec, with the English language and Protestantism allowed only in English-language public schools.
