Title
Early Protestant Church Architecture in Montreal
Abstract
The designers of the first Protestant churches built in Montreal between 1792 and 1807 attempted to ignore Catholic church architectural precedents. St. Gabriel Street Presbyterian Church, built in 1792, was based on Scottish tradition, plain with simple classical detailing, while the first Anglican churches imitated eighteenth century English models and were meant to symbolize religious and political dominance. St. Peter Street Presbyterian Church, built in 1807 by artisans and tradesmen from the American colonies who split from the St. Gabriel Street Church, followed the Scottish tradition.
