Fishermen and Merchants in 19th Century Gaspé: The Fishermen-Dealers of William Hyman and Sons
|
Abstract |
Anglo-Norman capital from the Channel Islands of Jersey and Guernsey controlled the Gaspé fishery in the 19th century. Most of this capital was used to produce dried cod for the Mediterranean markets. The author studies William Hyman's company, based in Grande-Grave, to illustrate the model of relations between merchants and fishermen for 150 years in Gaspé. The study illustrates how Gaspé society was shaped by the way it organized the production of dried cod.
