Guy Carleton. A Biography
Abstract
Guy Carleton (1724-1808), later Lord Dorchester, a British military officer, served two terms as Governor of Quebec (1768-1778 and 1785-1795). Defying the instructions of the British Parliament, Carleton took it upon himself to continue the policies of his predecessor, Governor James Murray, that allowed French Canadians to maintain their language, religion and laws.
