Abstract |
The Scottish-born George Clerk (1815-1875) immigrated to Canada via Australia in 1847 and in 1850, at the invitation of Montreal's Catholic Bishop Ignace Bourget, established the city's English language weekly True Witness and Catholic Chronicle. This ultramontane newspaper, aimed primarily at Irish Catholics, was promoted as an "organ in the English language to repel the ceaseless attacks of Protestant journals..." Its main rival was the weekly Protestant evangelical newspaper, The Montreal Witness, established in 1846 by fellow Scotsman John Dougall (1808-1886).
