Title
L’émeute Gavazzi : pouvoir et conflit religieux au Québec au milieu du 19e siècle
Abstract
Examines the debate in Lower Canada on freedom of expression following the Gavazzi riot in Montreal on June 9, 1853. Organized by the Protestant Orange Order, the visit of fiercely anti-Catholic and anti-Irish former priest Alessandro Gavazzi led to a violent confrontation between Scots and Irish in the city. While Protestant newspapers denounced Catholic intolerance, others emphasized the limits of freedom of expression and the impact of offensive speech on religious peace and public order in a society aiming at liberal democracy.
