Les origines d’une légende irlandaise… montréalaise !
Abstract
The author recounts the murder of Mary Gallagher, based on the case files kept at the archives of the Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec in Montreal. On the morning of June 27, 1879, police were summonded to 242 William Street at the corner of Murray Street in Montreal's Griffintown district where they found Gallagher's beheaded body. In a bed in the same room, the police found Susannah Kennedy, a young woman who claimed to be sleeping and unaware of the murder of her friend Mary Gallagher. Kennedy is charged with the murder and on October 16, 1879, she was sentenced to hang. The sentence was scheduled for December 5, 1879, but was commuted to life imprisonment, due to the fact that she was "considered not of sound mind." Kennedy died of tuberculosis in prison on September 26, 1890. Meanwhile, the ghost of Mary Gallagher supposedly re-appears every seven years on William Street at the corner of Murray...in search of her head.
