Title
Un rapprochement ambigu : l’Irlande, le Canada, les Irlandais et les Canadiens, 1822-1839
Abstract
The author argues that some French-language Lower Canadian newspapers portrayed Irish immigrants in the pre-Rebellion period as forming a transient hybrid identity with Francophones which she labels "Canadiennité". This new identity was counter balanced by discourses seeking to present the Irish as uniquely British, and thereby in opposition to Canadiennité.
